Final Project: Stop Motion/Visual Effects
3 Visual Effect Video Inspirations

Mary Poppins (1964)

Video 1.1. Short Clip of Mary Poppins Movie

Mary Poppins is a movie about a perfect nanny with magical powers. The movie has many visual effects that was still relatively new in the 60s. Thus, creating alot of change in the movie industry. Although I always found the movie quite boring and draggy, this one scene always stuck with me. I always loved the idea of being able to jump into a painting. When I read the brief for the assignment, this idea immediately came to my mind.

Zach King Compilation (2021)

Video 1.2. Zach King Compilation

Zach King is famous for his visual effects shorts. His videos are mostly short but very captivating and creative. He has been doing these videos for several years and has repeated many effects but it never gets old to watch as he has different plots for each video. His videos are light hearted, fun and have wholesome plots. Despite most of his fame coming from 6 second videos (Vine), each video has a fun storyline to it.

Simply Cubic (2016)

Video 1.3. Simply Cubic

I stumbled upon this video while searching for 'Visual Effect Videos' on Youtube. This idea is just as interesting as Video 1.1. to me. The idea however is flipped from Video 1.1. as this is about bringing art to life whereas Mary Poppins is about entering an art piece. Both would be very fun concepts to play with and attempt for this assignment.

Process
Pre Production Batch 1
I began with planning my short film story and looked for visual effect tutorials on Youtube. I had a few rough ideas I wanted to do that were inspired by the Visual Effect Video Inspirations, so this made it easier for my pre-production planning. Although I had these ideas and plans, along the way of carrying out this assignment, changed were made for several different reasons. Those reasons ranged from 'not enough time' to 'not actually possible to do' and a few other reasons in between.

Production Batch 1
Figure 1.1. First Batch of Filming
From the beginning of the semester, when we were first briefed by Mr Martin, I knew that I would need someone to be the subject in my film. So naturally, I made a friend of mine help me out. I filmed my video at his place and directed him with what to do. Since he is not an actor and I am not a filmmaker, photographer or director, it took several tries to get the shots right. Files of my first shooting production can be seen in Figure 1.1.. After I got the shots I needed, I went home and started editing it.

Post Production Batch 1

Video 2.1. Edit 1 - Piecing Together

I got home and imported the best video clips into Premiere Pro to start the post production stage. However, when piecing together the video files, I realised there where a few things I need to reshoot. First was the first visual effect as I did not notice certain parts where the camera or my subject moved. Second was a realisation after watching the video tutorials while editing, where  realised a few mistakes with my shots as it would not work so well for the visual effects. I had this problem was specifically with the second visual effect where my subject makes his money drawing become real.

Figure 1.3. Second Batch Second Attempt of Filming

So, I had to reshoot again. This time, I brought everything with me so I could check the shots, allowing me to check and reshoot if necessary. Which proved to be a smart decision on my side since it helped me save alot of time. As seen in Figure 1.2., I shot the major issue of my previous filming, the first visual effect. Before moving on to shooting the whole thing again, I quickly dumped the files into Premiere Pro to check if it worked better but I then realised it was a problem of the camera moving when I press the Record and Stop Recording button.

So, to fix that, my subject wore double layers of clothes and we reshot and let the camera continue rolling. Once I checked in Premiere Pro that it was okay, we continued on with shooting the other scenes, as seen in Figure 1.3. We even rerecorded the text messages to a shorter conversation as I was advised to shorten the entire video to 1minute.

Post Production Batch 2 - Round 1
Video 3.1. Edit 2 - Piecing Together

After rerecording everything I did a very rough draft of placing them together while still at my friend's place to ensure it was all okay and no more reshoots necessary. After I got home, I adjusted it more,  added text/timestamps and tried to trim the video down to 1minute. The best I could do was 1min 23sec and I hoped it was good enough. I then moved onto placing the title and end cards, video transitions and colour correction.

Video 3.5. Edit 6 - Colour Grading 2.2

Figure 3.6. Colour Comparison of Edits 4-6

Video 3.6. Edit 7 - Colour Grading 3

After feedback, I was advised on scenes I could cut and trim in order to shorten my video duration as well as adding more sound effects. Video 3.2 contains those changes. This video is also an ASMR kind of version of it, before adding in the music. I got all the sound effects (except for the text notification and picking up money sounds) from FreeSound. I reused the text notification sound effect from when editing the Lalin exercise. For the scene where my subject picks up the money from the paper, since it's  a pretty simple sound but the movements made it a little too specific to look for online, I recorded it myself with my phone and followed the video.

Video 3.3. shows my first attempt with colour grading. I used the orange/teal scheme, putting a slight orange for the shadows and a slight bluer shade for the highlights and midtones. However, when referring back to the lecture slides, I realised I used the orange/teal scheme in reverse.
So, in Video 3.4., I used the orange/teal scheme with a more teal colour in the shadows and more orange colour for highlights and midtones. It's important to note that I did not use an exact orange or teal colour but instead used what is in the similar direction that worked for the video without pushing it too far. Video 3.5. shows an extra layer of colour adjustment as I realised some parts were too overexposed.

However, after looking at all of them, I realised I liked the reversed orange/teal scheme better, see comparisons in Figure 3.6. Edit 5 and 6 made the white walls look dirty and it seemed more like a dark and emotional drama instead of an easy-going fun video. However, I did like certain parts that had an orange tint, and not so clinical looking with the strong amount of blue that is in Edit 4. Which is how Edit 7 came about, mixing the two things I liked most together

Final Outcome
Never Too Late

FEEDBACK

Week 13
Process
Post Production Batch 1 (Video 2.1.)
- Cut down to 1 minute

Week 14
Process
Post Production Batch 2 - Round 1
- Can trim a few more scenes (e.g. walking to grab the walleg, sitting down to open the book & putting money in the wallet)
- Some scenes can be sped up (e.g. opening the book & drawing out the money)
- Need to put sound effect, I cannot just hide it with music
- Colour grade it to give a theme or style
