INSTRUCTIONS

Assignment 1: Proposal

Assignment 2: Critical Review

Assignment 3: Research Implementation - Primary Data

Assignment 4: Research Reflection Report & Recorded Presentation

FEEDBACK

Assignment 1: Proposal
Week 3
- Research problem needs to be more specific but not too niche
- I have a few options to consider in the newly discussed topic (typography in movies)

Week 4
- In text citation is in alphabetical order
- Rationale can afford to be more personal and touch on why I want to study it
- The current last paragraph in my rationale is more historical and would be better suited in problem statement instead
- I need to add a conclusion paragraph to tie up my problem statement (e.g. "This research aims to...")
- From 4 of the valid articles I currently have, I still should look for 2 more research articles to be safe considering one may not completely align with my topic
- Articles should be in the recent 5 years for the next assignment

Assignment 2: Critical Review
Week 5
- I can widen my scope of keywords when doing research for articles (e.g. "graphic language in posters", "graphic design in film", etc.)
- When searching for articles, be more wary of the year of the references used within the articles
- I need to clean up my critical reviews with better and clearer structure and format
- I need to describe the purpose of the paper and summarise it before breaking down its structure

Week 6
- Some words/sentences need to be cleaned up so it is easier for a reader to comprehend
- I can find another article/author to cite the point I made as to why it is important to listen for further emphasis in Kim & Suk's (2019) Critical Review
- Weaknesses or strengths of the article I am reviewing needs to be more apparent, especially in Mega & Kawami's review
- A conclusion needs to be added in Mega & Kawami's review to tie up my review and it's importance to my research
- Variation of "authors name (year)" should be practised and is unnecessary in some cases
- "Visual Analysis of Movie Posters" is a topic I can use to group the critical review's
- I will need to find a grouping topic for Kim & Suk's review

Week 7
- Clean up certain sentences/words so it is easier for a reader to comprehend
- Check APA 7th ed. style citations for Malay names
- Good choice of words used to make a good critique
- Good that not too much content of the paper is repeated but the important information is provided
- The choice of writing style for when I merge the articles for the literature review is up to me
- Start thinking of the research method I want to apply for my primary research

Assignment 3: Research Implementation - Primary Data
Week 9
- I need to have citations to back why the chosen primary research method is the best fit for my research
- If I choose interviews, I should to reach out to professionals. If I choose focus groups, the general public is fine
- When looking for participants or interviewees, research ethics needs to be practised and confirmation will need to be shown in the appendix ("this data is not for commercial purposes")
- I need to prepare my research questions

Week 10
- Justification for research design and reasoning for choice of movie posters are acceptable
- The amount of questions I have are okay for a focus group and they are well related to my research objective
- I will need to justify my choice of the Sci-fi genre in my rationale and proposal
- Since E.T. has 2 original posters, I can show both during the focus group
- Research Ethics is just about stating how I will carry it out (e.g. Asking for permission, informing them beforehand about pictures and recordings, etc.)
- The procedure can be seperated into pre and during. Pre is the message samples I will use and where I will send them to. During is how I will conduct the focus group
- I will need a rationale of why I chose each participant
- I need to state and justify why I choose to use Microsoft Teams as my platform
- I will need to take screenshots throughout the focus group discussion for documentation

Week 11
- Break the transcript into sections for easy navigation for myself. It will especially come in handy when writing my dissertation
- Insert image of the posters
- My work is well documented and organised
- Be consistent with my use of 'typography' or 'text'. They mean different things
- Show a screenshot of the meeting in the Summary & Data Analysis
- The transcription can be previewed and linked in the appendix section
- Sample of reaching out to gather particiants can also be in the appendix

Assignment 4: Research Reflection Report & Recorded Presentation
Week 13
- When presenting Research Method, I can mention "for more details, please refer to my report"
- When presenting Data Collection & Analysis I should mention "This section will discuss according to the posters that were featured in the focus group"
- Animate points for data collection so it isn't too wordy all at once
- Make space for the placement of my video
- I can consider the design elements of the slides to be a frame for my window

REFLECTION

Experience
I have always struggled with academic writing and writing in general, even with high school essays. However, this module has stirred something in me, I enjoyed writing for these assignments. It's weird to admit that I did not have as much of a hard or excruciating time writing for this module as I am usually used to based on previous academic writing modules from my previous university. Dr Jinchi has guided me through the confusions with an amazing amount of patience and clear feedback & explanations. She ensured all students understood the format and structure of everything, making it less painful for me, personally, to be able to complete the assignments. Thus, it is safe to say, this is the only academic writing module I have ever enjoyed and did not find mentally, emotionally and physically painful.

Observations
I have always understood the importance of academic writing is for us to gain more context and history  of what we do, which broadens our knowledge and essentially helps us improve our work. However, I never realised the importance to being able to write. I always believed that it was a skill not everyone has and not everyone needs, especially since I want to be a designer, not a writer. From this module though, I learnt that writing would allow me to learn how to better communicate with people, which is important for a designer as I will need to collaborate and communicate with clients and many other people in various fields of work.

Findings
This module has made me more patient and focused as the assignments required alot of that. It also taught me the importance of planning before rushing into things with the mentality that I can just wing it and hope something good comes out. Considering how I worked on the assignments, it was a good reminder that it is okay to work on things in multiple short bursts of time instead of sitting and staring at it all day and being unproductive, which is how I used to work on my academic writing assignments.
