Final Project: Animated Infographics
My Personal Experience
A 30 min writing time story share
Attachment 1.1. Personal Burnout Story

Pre-Production
Research

Attachment 2.1. Burnout Research
I did the research for the group to read and gain a deeper understanding on burnout. I also included a bunch of different motion graphic videos as visual references to give us an idea or inspiration for our own burnout video.

Planning
Attachment 2.2. Group Planning Sheet
After I completed the script breakdown, we discussed the visual suggestions, graphics, storyline and task delegations. It was suggested by one group member to seperate the work to illustrators and animators. This worked out well for us as half the group was on the Japan trip for Intercultural Design during Week 5. It allowed the illustrators to get their start on work while we were on the trip.

Production Progress
Illustrations
Attachment 3.1. Illustration Progression (Week 5)
The illustrators continously shared their progress with the group and got some feedback.

Some feedback throughout illustration progression:
- Make it look cuter (strokes thicker, more details, etc.)
- The handwriting style fits well
- Change scene 4.2 to lightbulbs that light up instead of water droplets that fall (easier to animate)
- Our mushroom guy doesnt have legs or knees, just shoes for feet

Animations

Video 1.2. Scene 2 Progression 1 (Week 6)

Video 1.3. Scene 3.1 Progression 1 (Week 7)

Video 1.4. Scene 1 Progression 2 (Week 7)

Video 1.5. Scene 2 Progression 2 (Week 7)

I started with Scene 1 and worked on it according to our animatic and instructions given by Riko, the illustrator for my scenes. I reogranised the AI file layers so that it would be easier once I import it into AE and animate. I also retraced our mushroom character so that he would look cuter. Once I imported it into AE, the animations were pretty straight forward and simple as I only had to use the puppet tool on a few elements. I repeated the same process for Scene 2 but did add much animation. The results are seen in Video 1.1. and Video 1.2. for Scene 1 & 2 respectively.

While waiting for feedback, I moved on to animate my 3rd scene, Scene 3.1. Repeating the same process of reorganising layers and retracing certain elements to make it cuter (mushroom man) or to ease animation process (globe map and character from happy to sad). I then put it into AE and used the puppet tool to animate the characters hand to be typing along with aligning the opacity to have his head and facial expression to be sad. I then watched a tutorial video to animate the globe which was much simpler than I thought it would be. I then used the wiggle rotation effect to create the simple movement of the four character expression illustrations of "possibility of burnout". I also used the scale and bounce effect to give it an interesting entrance. The rest of the scene was faily straight forward with the same animations of text animations, puppet tool, opacity, etc.

After receiving feedback for my first 2 scenes, I made the necessary adjustments. I also reworked on scene 2 in AI and added in a notebook and text to give the voiceover captions in an interesting manner. I then added the new notebook elements into AE and adjusted everything to have it fit together. I also added in the bounce effect to the '5 common signs of burnout' text circles.

Attachment 4.2. Group Planning Sheet Revised (Week 7)
After the first animation progression check, I wrote out some suggestions for the animators as seen in Attachment 4.1.. We also asked the group and had a feedback session through Whatsapp where both Riko and Ser Yeet gave some ideas to improve animations, some of the feedback given can be seen in Figure 1.1..

During Week 7 class, Mr Martin requested to see a draft compilation by the weekend, so I double checked with the other animators of their own work timeline and when they will be able to complete/update their scenes. There was then an issue raised from one animator about not being able to comple the animations, title cards and compiling. I then took on the title cards since I was complete with my scenes and it is a faily simple part to do. I also adjusted the work timeline for the animators final deadline, giving them a day extra to work, changes can be seen in Attachment 4.2.

Post Production Progress
Compilation
Video 2.1. Compilation Draft (Week 7)
Since the compiler was busy, I compiled our videos for first compilation draft. I added in some transitions between a few scenes but not all since some scenes were not finalised.

FEEDBACK
Week 6
Production Progress - Animations
Video 1.1. - Scene 1 Progression 1
- The visuals do not match the voice over script "You are stressed and exhausted. It feels like you can't go on anymore"
- Animate the text and the "You Are" should be smaller while "Burntout" bigger.

Video 1.2. - Scene 2 Progression 1
- Needs captions because it's too empty with just the guy sleeping

REFLECTIONS
Experience
The outcome of this assignment was quite disappointing as there were parts of the animation that I felt could be drastically improved. However, with it being so close to the end of sem, it was hard to get further improvements from my groupmates. Working in a team is always hard as finding people who are on the same wavelength both work wise and creative wise is not so easy, even if you can get along with them outside of group work.
Observations
Although I enjoyed working on the motion graphic animation, I realised that I much prefer frame by frame aniamtion. Eventhough it is absolutely tedious work, I enjoy the freedom that comes with  being able to draw my frames instead of working with set tools to animate. Although AE is fairly simple to use and much better and friendlier than Premiere Pro (in my opinion), I still find it quite annoying and constraining to use.
Findings
I learnt some of the basic motion graphic methods that can be of extreme use to me in the future as a  fully rounded designer. It was also interesting to learn the different animation styles and how they all come under the animation umbrella. I enjoyed that I was able to learn how to use AE a little more in depth and the basics to a motion graphic animation.
