FEEDBACK
Assignment 1: Draft Dissertation
Week 2
- Before answering my RQ's in discussion, give a background about what visual elements are/what movie posters are/purpose of movie posters
- 5.1 is background while 5.2 & 5.3 answers RQ's
- Titles of 5.2 & 5.3 will be my themes (e.g. design principles, visual meaning, visual message)
- Breakdowns (5.2 & 5.3) must reflect what the heading is (pay attention to key words in the headings)
- 5.1 can be Background/History of movie posters. Touch on history of movie posters, graphic design and about visual elements and roles
- 5.2 Graphic Design and Roles Visual Elements Play in Movie Posters (working title): answers RQ1
- Themes used in 5.2 will most likely be Design Principles and Elements, Roles of Visual Elements in Movie Posters
- 5.2.1 can be about various visual elements and the roles they play/emotions they evoke/visual meaning they create
- 5.2.1 can also just be about how they create meaning, through colours and such
- It should be about creating meaning, evoking emotions, visual message
- 5.3 is Message Conveyence (how and what type of message)
- Give a slight intro that i will be discussing it
- Could be structured as 5.3.1 how message is conveyed & 5.3.2 what types of messages were conveyed
- Alternatively, it could be structured as 5.3.1 Poster 1: Describe what poster, what the message is and how its conveyed through graphic design
- If so, since I have alot of posters (6 posters 5 movies), either I extensively talk about only 3 or i describe all of them quickly in a "touch n go" mode
- Joshua's statement (Tron poster, pg 26, 'from what I understand...') can be under message conveyed and supported with secondary data

Week 3
- 5.1 should explain how the discussion pans out
- 5.2 should recap that its answering RQ1 and how the 3 key visual elements create the 2 roles (story creation and evoking emotions)
- Include about 2-3 focus group quotations
- Check APA style referencing for focus groups
- Cover atleast 2 movie posters in each sub section (5.2.1 & 5.2.2)
- Add the images of the posters that are being discussed
- Research needs to be editted into past tense

Week 4
- In table of contents, acknowledgements & abstract dont need to show page number
- table of contents is also not needed in the table
- In Anlysis and Discussion, after i put in a participants quote, i need to wrap it back up and bring readers back into the topic (esp 5.2.1 and 5.2.2)
- at the end of each section, link it back to topic and add in supporting literature
- In 5.3 it is not visual analysis since its still part of my focus group. clarify that with: "this is done through analysing the participants responses to understand the visual flow of each poster and the design principles that are used to convey the message"
- last paragraph of 5.3 can be placed with first paragraph of 5.3 so it flows together well
- in 5.3.1 i can cite supporting literature on what contrast does and how it brings out the emotions mentioned (mystery, horror, trapped, etc)
- 5.3.2 last paragpraph would be good to sum up the whole 5.3 section, so bring it to the end of 5.3.3
- in 5.3.3 after the quotes of sot, joshua and addina, bring readers back to the research about design principles and its importance to good communication
- explain how design principles is important to visual flow through citation

Week 6
- In conclusion, recap research problem before concluding
- "To conclude" has more impact when its at the very end
- Instead of "In short", use "To conclude"
- Dont just mention "As Addina", re introduce who she is: "As one of the focus group participants, Addina, mentioned"
- Add in if i met my RO and RQ before ending
- Explain how i spqcifically answered both RQ's
- Start thinking of no.7 Project Recommendation
- It does not have to revolve around scifi, it can be centered around the study of design elements reflecting certain messages or evoking emotions, etc.
- I can think of redesigning something, collab work (with Netflix maybe), something with/for the local scene and productions, etc.
- Either suggest 1 proj and delve deep into it or suggest 2 project and talk about it abit only

Week 7
- Lit Review should be only 800-850 words, i need to cut down
- I can take out the parts that talk about the structure. I only need the ones talking about their research
- Give an intro between 3.0 and 3.1 to research methodology: "In this section the researcher will explain and justify the methods that were engaged in the research to collect primary research."
- dont give full data (script and transcript, focus group meeting link) for ethical reasons

Assignment 2Final Dissertation
Week 9
- Feedback written in PDF of Assignment 1: Draft Dissertation

Assignment 2Visual Design Publication
Week 9
- Good that I showed visual samples of the fonts put together to get a better feel of the ideas. Especially idea 1 as the uppercases put together seemed worrying
- Idea 1 and 3 are most suitable to bring forward as they fit my theme well and would work for a publication well
- Idea 3 seems more substantial as the focus is about elements of movies and it has potential to stand out more with the images and colours
- The most right image of the layout references in idea 3, big image and single text column over the spreads, would be suitable for my theme
- purpose of the book is to share and document my research so clarity must be there
- Colours in Idea 3 are also abit more easy to read for a publication
- All ideas are ok to choose from but idea 3 seem best fit

Week 10
- Font wise is interesting but header font does not work well in cover page
- Find a font similar to header font for the cover page, should be bold
- Centralize the cover page items and try use image as full background
- Try not to use the image as my cover page, use it as inspiration and come up with my own design cause of copyright issues
- Can create stg related to the planets/universe. or edit something with the eye and structure
- "A design research dissertation" on cover page is not needed. Just have title and my name
- 9pt for Turnip body text, 10 was still a little big
- Colours are decent, it matches the cover page too
- Content page subhead doesnt need an indent as its a different pt size. Keep the indent for subsub head
- Caption is not needed for every picture, it's up to me if I want to or not
- If double column text, make images smaller than the column grid size to give more breathing space for the text
- Desaturate some of the background page colours so its more legible

Week 11
- out of my 3 favourite cover designs, the second one is better. need to work on making the orange in the eye more saturated
- although cover page uses a different header font, I can keep the font in the book to be the original header font
- contents page font change to white so its less heavy feeling
- in contents page, page numbers are traditionally on the right while topic numbers are on the left, so it might take awhile for readers to register that its page numbers
- picture in 'project recommendations' could be people at the cinema maybe
- double quotes from research should have a fullstop before end quote

Assigment 3: Research for Article Publication
Week 12
- Don't need to be detailed in Abstract by listing amount of participants of naming the movies. Just say how many posters: "6 rated popular sci-fi movie posters"
- abstract picture can be a generic movie poster or a pretty photo of people watching a movie
- later when submitting change the red words to black and bold. Remove the brackets with word count
- Problem Statement can cut first paragraph to help with word count since introducing Graphic Design was already covered in Introduction
- Don't cut Problem Statement anymore, reword the last sentence maybe to shorten it
- Add in RQ and RO into Problem Statement
- In Appendix put a pictures of all the posters together and refer to it in Methodology
- Findings & Discussion can have two sections subtitles "Story creation" and "Evoking Emotions"
- Add in a participant quote in Evoking Emotions
- Attach 2-3 more quotes (transcript screenshots) in appendix for both story creation and evoking emotions

Week 13
- Pictures are decent
- Label Appendix 2&3 to give clearer understanding: "Appendix 2 (Data for Story Creation)"
- Adding picture credit list is fine, good that i labeled the figures
- Can cut and shorten a few sentences in Findings&Discussions. It should focus more on the data from the focus group

REFLECTION
Experience
I found starting this module quite confusing as I did not really grasp what exactly we were supposed to do for analysis and discussion. However, once I read the slides provided during the first week and had consultations, I began to understand the difference between analysis & discussion and findings. Once I got a clear understanding, I actually found it pretty easy to work and, as odd as it may seem, I had quite a bit of fun writing. The only part of this module I did not particularly enjoy was the Visual Design Publication as I see very little purpose to it. To my understanding, it’s just a publication exercise but it does not really serve a purpose to our research. Although I am quite happy with my outcome, I still personally believe it was the least significant assignment and I might even forget about it in the future.

Observations
I realised that I actually enjoy writing research articles despite its tediousness of finding and collecting primary or secondary data. Of course this would only apply to topics I can enjoy and learn from, so it is still highly subjective and biassed. I was and am really proud of the work I have done for this module as from my experience in my previous university with research articles/papers have never really gone so well for me. Comparing my previous uni experience with Dr Jinchi’s feedback, I realise we are heavily influenced and affected by the type of lecturer that guides us. I do believe I have done pretty decently for this module and I know for a fact it would not have been near possible without Dr Jinchi’s guidance. It is from her that I have found joy in such an assignment.

Findings
I did learn a lot about sci-fi movie posters and movie posters in general and interestingly enough, it has sparked a little interest in sci-fi for me as I have never cared much for the sci-fi genre. I was reminded about how important it is to apply design principles and elements into everything we do and how to not think about it too technically. Such as using it to evoke emotions. It is not an obvious and technical way of utilising design principles and elements, but based on my research, there are so many ways to use and apply them in an out of the box manner, which is something designers should be more conscious of in order to enhance our work.
