Figure 1.1. Mockup Format Size (Week 4, 14 - 21 May 2024) |
I decided on the book format size while doing a Task 1 exercise during Week 4.
As explained in the Task 1 exercise, I wanted something a little square-ish
looking but not an exact square. This is because squares often symbolise
rigidity, which can also be related to conservatism, which is what my book is
essentially about. However, the reason I chose to not have a perfect square
was because the book was about me finding my way and allowing changes to
happen, therefore, not rigid or perfectly square.

Attachment 1.1. Layout Progress 1 (Week 9, 18 June 2024)
During ILW I finished up my drawings, as seen in
Task 2. My book cover design progression had already began there as it fell under
the illustration & visual designs. Although in Week 9 I had a few
typefaces options for my book cover, I liked this font, Melodrama Variable,
most for my book cover (see Figure 2.1.). I used Turnip fot the synopsis and
author font as that was the font I intended to use for body text in my book.
At the same time of working on my cover, I began placing my content text
into InDesign and playing with the layouts. I had a few options of margin
grids but I did not think to save them, so you'll just have to take my word
for it. I did choose the margin grid I liked most as I felt the 4 columns
allowed me a good amount of space to play around with since I can use 2
column text and place it either on the left, center or right of the page
margins. I determined my hangline for body text based on the placement, size
and space of my chapter title. As for row margin lines, I made use of the
baseline grid that followed the leading of my body text.
For Week 9 layout progress, I mainly focused on the text and image layout. I
chose to not place in my actual image illustrations yet and use a box frame
as I did not want to get distracted by the illustrations. I wanted to focus
purely on the flow of text and image first. I also started on page 6 as I
knew I would have to leave space for the title, content and imprint pages,
so I figured 4 pages would be enough. Although I was planning pn using
Turnip font for my body text, I actually forgot to change the font and was
using the default Minion Pro font, which is a nice font for body text of
course, but was not what I intended to use at all.
Attachment 1.2. Layout Progress 2 (Week 10, 25 June 2024)
This week I finished up my layouts and placed everything into InDesign. My
book cover design was also updated based on feedback session. I adjusted
certain pages or text layouts to be more consistent while avoiding too
much repetition and predictability. I also finally realised I was on the
wrong font and adjusted everything accordingly. While doing this though, I
realised how Minion Pro was still quite nice as a body text. I decided to
test print a spread using the two different body text fonts, Minion Pro
and Turnip. When I printed it out and had them side by side, I definitely
prefered Turnip more as it was more interesting to look at. Turnip has a
slight typewriter font feel that is quite subtle and somehow, makes it
more interesting to look at and read from compared to Minion Pro, atleast
that's my opinion.
During feedback sessions, we talked about the final part of printing and
the types of paper to be looking at, especially for the cover and content.
When I went home and was preparing my file for the print shop, I then
realised I needed an extra spread since the cover would be printed
seperately.

FEEDBACK
Week 9
Progression
- Make the font on the over bigger
- The cover needs to have another colour and element. Try a flower? or a
bird?
- Create folios (the chapter & page number at the top)
- Do I want initials? (first letter of new chapter being decorated?)
- In a spread, have one main hero as hierarchy and dont have it all feeling stagnant
